NFPA 101:
Phosphorescent Labels

The National Fire Prevention Association’s Life Safety Code, known as NFPA 101, requires the presence of luminescent signs in industrial facilities for cases of emergency. Signs should denote exits and directions to exits, the locations of emergency phone and fire extinguisher and markings of stairwells, steps and handrails for wayfinding in dark conditions.

An emergency is defined by NFPA 101 as a failure of the main power supply or any manual act that effects normal light levels within a facility. In addition to highly visible wayfinding signs, the NFPA 101 requires that buildings include emergency lighting that can illuminate an area for at least 90 minutes after the main power supply is disrupted.

According NFPA 101, all exit signs must display the word “Exit” in letters at least 6 inches tall. They have to continuously illuminate at all times that the building is occupied. To simplify wayfinding in dark conditions, these exit signs should be placed on all doors and stairwells, with arrows denoting the quickest route out of the facility.

DuraLabel Phosphorescent Tape and BoldGlo Phosphorescent Tape meet many building codes that require emergency signage to maintain visibility in no-light conditions, including NFPA 101. This durable supply provides visible luminescence for up to 8 hours after facility lights go off. Phosphorescent and BoldGlo Phosphorescent Tapes are non-radioactive, non-toxic, lead-free and self-extinguishing for safe indoor use. These tapes are ideal for placement in in low-light conditions where call-to-attention labels would be beneficial.
