To Avoid Liability, Create a No-Driving-While-Texting Policy

An article in yesterday's online edition of Business Week points out:

"Cell phone usage and texting have grown to become a leading factor in automobile accidents. As of this writing, only nine states have legislated against driving while texting. That means that 41 states have no laws restricting DWT. And that can mean trouble for any business owner."

You may have heard about the mass transit accidents that have happened as a result of drivers texting while driving. Those are the high-profile accidents that make the news. To protect your business the Business Week article (read here) recommends that all business have a written policy against texting while driving.

OSHA Above Ground

A new blog, written by an OSHA employee, started up on Janary15th. It provides some interesting insights, and level-headed commentary about what OSHA does and how things work inside OSHA. It is called OSHA Aboveground.

I particularly found the post from last Friday, title Clowns To The Left... to be interesting. It is about the OSHA rule making process.

Although it is just getting started, this blog looks like it is going to be very good reading.

Catching Up On News

I ran into an interesting safety blog that covers safety from a different view that I do. My background includes working in industrial construction, power plants, paper mills and refineries, so I tend to lean toward covering safety in construction, industry and utilities. The OSHA Underground Blog seems to cover smaller business. While I try to also provide information about safety resources, training and codes & regulations, the OSHA Underground has more of a focus on reporting safety violations and problems. So although we both talk about safety, we provide completely different views of safety.

It has been about a week since the last post in this blog. We've be working to move our blog from being hosted on Blogger, to being an integrated part of our web site. It was a little more complicated than anticipated and involved changing our hosting, but we should now be back to our regular posting schedule. The next step is a complete upgrade for our web site.

New Features on this Blog

We have added two new features that will make reading this blog easier. They are at the top of the left column on this page.

The "Add Feed" button provides a quick way to add an RSS feed to any of the more popular feed readers including Google, Yahoo, Bloglines, AOL, NewsGator and MSNLive. When you roll your mouse pointer over this button a list of available RSS readers appears. Click on the one you use. If you are not signed into your account, you will be asked to lock in. The "Safe Workplace OSHA Voluntary Protection Program" RSS feed will be added automatically.

The second new feature allows you to receive new posts by email through a service called "FeedBlitz". Enter your email address in the box to the left and click on the "Subscribe Me!" button. Feedblitz will monitor this blog and email you a copy of any new posts.

Safe Workplace - Updated Website

Our VPP web site (http://www.safe-workplace.com) has been updated. The VPP Labeling Applications section has been expanded to include information about more types of safety related labeling. It now covers six type of safety labels and signs, including descriptions and a discussion of design considerations. Label types that are covered include: informational safety labels; warning labels, danger labelers, general information, pipe marking and RTK labels.

You can use the "VPP Labeling Applications" menu above to directly access the new pages. We anticipate that this section will continue to expand as coverage of additional types of labels and signs are added.
